SHANGHAI -- BASF will showcase a variety of innovative coatings products and solutions at the ChinaCoat 2009, which will be held at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre in Shanghai, China from November 18 to 20, 2009.

Exhibiting under the theme of "Your Preferred Partner to The Coating Industry", BASF will display raw materials for coating and paints catering to the automotive, plastic, wood, industrial, printing and packaging as well as architectural industries.

"With our acquisition of Ciba this year, the range of BASF products for the coatings industry has been significantly enhanced. Our joint resources in production networks, staff experience and industrial know-how have enabled BASF to offer a stronger customer value proposition and become a preferred partner in the coatings industry," said Gops Pillay, Group Vice President, Dispersion & Pigments Asia Pacific, BASF. "As a global leading company for water based, UV and high solids technologies, we are well-positioned to comply with industry standards and country-specific requirements. I am confident that we can better serve our customers with sustainable and innovative solutions," Pillay continued.

BASF offers a range of products to the coatings and paint industry, which include dispersions, resins, pigments, photo-initiators and catalysts, light stabilisers, pigment dispersants, levelling agents, defoamers and other additives. Additionally BASF offers a broad portfolio of chemical intermediates for the coatings and paint industry: crosslinking agents, reactive diluents, solvents, additives as well as building blocks for resins. Some of the latest BASF product highlights at ChinaCoat 2009 are stated below:

Global launch of effect pigment:

  • Lumina® Royal Blue - ChinaCoat 2009 marks the global launch of this cutting-edge product, which is a new-generation interference pigment exhibiting the highest chromaticity with a new optimized size distribution. Ideal for the automotive, 3C (computer, communications and consumer electronics), sporting goods and printing and packaging industries.

Innovation through colours:

  • Sicopal® Orange L 2430 - An inorganic pigment newly launched in Asia, this product meets the highest requirements for red and orange shades in the coatings industry.
  • Glacier™ Frost White effect pigments - Newly launched in Asia, the product represents the newest generation of synthetic mica flakes coated with titanium dioxide, to provide the most pristine pearlish appearance available in the market, with blue undertones and sparking effects.
  • Irgazin® Solid Red - Creating new styling opportunities, this product is the highest-performance yellowish red pigment available, with its high saturation, opacity and outstanding light fastness, for automotive applications.

Commitment to meet requirements for safety and environment:

  • Acronal® ECO 612 ap (premium interior paint) - This ingredient can be formulated into low-odor emulsion paint, with excellent resistance against hydrophillic and hydrophobic stains, water and alkaline and scrubs.
  • Laromer® WA 9057, UA 9059 and UA 9060 - Excellent adhesion and fast drying properties for flooring applications water-based UV products.
  • Joncryl® FLX 5020 - Opening new possibilities in the printing medium and for heavy duty applications in the packaging market, this new product has an excellent resistance and resolubility balance.

Vital building blocks for coatings and printing & packaging formulators:

  • IrgaflowTM 100 and IrgaflowTM 110 - These new leveling agents for solvent based applications demonstrate enhanced properties and better compatibility across a broader range of resin system.

Innovative intermediates solutions tailor-made to meet customers' needs

  • Liquid N-vinyl caprolactam - BASF's new liquid NVC enables customers to improve their process reliability, ease of handling, as well as enhancing the well known performance of NVC such as high cure speed, adhesion to plastics and film flexibility. These are the advantages over NVC which comes as a solid product that has to be molten before use which bears the risk that NVC turns dark or even polymerizes.
  • CapromerTM: high-quality polycaprolactone - As a speciality polyester and branded under Capromer™, polycaprolactone (PolyCLO) serve as building blocks in the production of thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs) and as binders for coating systems and adhesives. Through Capromer, these products acquire essential properties such as flexibility even at low temperatures, hydrolytic stability and exceptional mechanical resistance. In processing, Capromer features consistent reactivity and low viscosity. Capromer™ is a trademark of BASF SE.

"BASF develops raw materials for coatings in compliance with environmental, safety, energy efficiency and country specific requirements for different applications," said Dr. Lixing Min, Director, Business Management, Greater China, BASF. "We aim to leverage our advanced technologies to address the unmet market needs of China, with a strong focus on environmentally friendly solutions."
