LINZ -- The striking façade is dazzling in its brand new elegant silver design. It's the façade of the newly reopened voestalpine Steel Innovation Center in Linz. The new four-layer paint system surrounding the building is an innovative product jointly developed by voestalpine and BASF Coatings.

The laboratory complex offers optimal working conditions for about 70 researchers and testing engineers and cost around 13 million euros. At the opening ceremony, BASF Coatings was represented by Uwe Pelchen, head of Coil Coatings Sales Europe, and Dr. Lothar Jandel, head of Technology Management Industrial Coatings. "We are very pleased that the successful and long-term cooperation between our two companies is truly publically visible in the new metal façade of this important representative building," said Jandel. Dr. Franz Allerstorfer, voestalpine's building project manager, praised BASF Coatings' innovation and the successful cooperation in the development of the brilliant silver façade.

The new voestalpine laboratory center also attests to the current development of the market. Wolfgang Eder, CEO of voestalpine AG, said that every aspect of steel has become "more diverse and more colorful." In addition to the sharp rise in possible combinations within the groups for materials and coatings from six combinations back in the 1970s to over 100 today, the challenge is now primarily in nanotechnology, which makes it possible to move into new - almost atomic - dimensions. For Pelchen, one thing is clear: "voestalpine is a recognized leader in the area of surface technology. Just as for us, the pillars 'quality' 'technology' and 'innovation' are integral components of our partner's strategy."

BASF Coatings has already maintained a successful partnership with voestalpine for over 20 years. The success in the building and household appliance sectors represents a special milestone of the companies' joint history. The development and market launch of chromate-free universal primers in cooperation with voestalpine in the mid-1990s was groundbreaking. Today, the partnership continues to be defined by innovative ideas. voestalpine regularly tests new BASF Coatings' products in the lab or at its own plants. "We will continue to be a successful and reliable partner to help voestalpine achieve its defined objectives," Pelchen promised.
