Published on 2004-04-06. Author : SpecialChem

In order to strengthen its world leading position in coil coatings and its position in China, BASF Coatings will expand its presence in Shanghai (China).

Coil coatings are a core element of BASF Coatings growth strategy in industrial coatings. The Asia-Pacific region and China in particular is a key link in this strategy. China is undergoing enormous growth in demand for colour-coated steel, fuelled by the expanding construction industry.

To better service technical, quality and supply requirements of our customers BASF Coatings will add its production capability to the coil coatings sales, marketing and technical service expertise already established in Shanghai.

BASF Coatings has already been operating a coil coatings business in China for a number of years. In 2003 a dedicated BASF coil coating technical service laboratory was established in Shanghai to offer specialized service. Today, this laboratory carries out the full range of physical testing of coil coatings and supports the BASF technical service team. The coil coating product had been imported from Germany. The teamwork between BASF Coatings headquarters in Muenster and the Shanghai laboratory is very close.

"BASF's new production capability reflects our commitment to the Chinese coil coaters", said Tony Jones, Asia Pacific Regional Manager for BASF Industrial Coatings and responsible for the coil coatings business. "We see that local production supply capability is essential to meet the specific local needs and performance characteristics, for coil coaters, with supply that is close to the market".

Mr. Jones also said, "BASF’s global position in coil coatings industry can be attributed to service leadership, technological leadership and product innovation. Through product innovation we are able to assist our coil coating customers grow both their customer and market bases. Such production will enable us to fully support the integration of established and innovative technology."
