Midland, MI -- Jacqueline K. Barton, a member of Dow's Board of Directors, was named Outstanding Director for 2006 by the Outstanding Directors Exchange (ODX). Dr. Barton will receive her award at the ODX corporate governance conference in San Francisco, California in March 2007. She is one of eight directors who will be honored for making valuable contributions to the companies on whose boards they serve.

Outstanding Director candidates must be nominated and seconded by fellow board members. To qualify, they must have consistently made strong contributions to a corporate board or have been key players during important periods in a company's growth or transition. Outstanding Director selections are made by the Outstanding Directors editorial board, under the guidance of the Outstanding Directors Advisory Board, which is a group of 25 sitting corporate directors and CEOs from a cross section of American industry.

When Andrew Liveris became CEO in 2003, Barton helped him understand her vision. "She educated me on the notion that a company that regards science as an investment needs to have a business driver," Liveris says. With that decision forged, Liveris says he turned to Barton and commented, "Okay, Jackie, you made me think of this strategic answer for our company, now help me recruit someone." Ultimately, William Banholzer was selected as Dow's first chief technology officer. She is Dow's only outside director with specialized knowledge in chemistry and has taken on the role of translator for fellow board members. Barton is committed to the idea that Dow will either rise or fall on its ability to develop technology in the broadest sense - not merely chemical technology - to solve many of its needs.

Dr. Barton was elected to the Dow Board of Directors in February 1993 and currently serves as the chair of the Environment, Health and Safety Committee, and as a member of the Compensation Committee. She also currently serves as a member of the Corporate Scientific Advisory board for Gilead Sciences, a public pharmaceutical company. She previously sat on the boards of Cortech, Inc. and GeneOhm Sciences, Inc.
