Arch Wood Protection Seeks to Amend EPA Registration

Published on 2002-03-18. Author : SpecialChem

Will Continue To Produce CCA for a Variety of Industrial Uses

Arch Wood Protection, Inc., a subsidiary of Arch Chemicals, Inc., announced today that it will seek to amend its registration with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA) to transition to a new generation of wood preservatives for use in non-industrial treated wood products by December 31, 2003.

Arch Wood Protection is taking this step as part of the ongoing CCA re-registration process and in light of current interest in and anticipated market demand for alternative wood preservatives for non-industrial uses. The Company doesn't expect this transition to have a material impact on Arch's operating results.

Arch Wood Protection's new generation of preserved wood is marketed under the name Wolmanized® Natural Select™ wood. As with CCA, the new preservative in Natural Select™ wood has been approved for use by the EPA and provides excellent protection against termites and rotting.

Arch Wood Protection emphasized that it will continue to produce CCA for industrial end use applications such as highway construction, utility poles and pilings.

Arch Wood Protection stands by the safety of wood products treated with CCA and continues to support sound scientific research, which has consistently upheld the safety of CCA-treated wood when used as recommended. As part of the normal re-registration process, Arch Wood Protection will continue working with the EPA on performing the scientific analyses associated with registering the product.
