AMP From ANGUS Chemical Company Helps to Reduce Cost, VOCs in Alkyd Paints

Published on 2007-05-09. Author : SpecialChem

Nürnberg, Germany -- ANGUS Chemical Company ("ANGUS"), a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company ("Dow"), offers customers the opportunity to replace raw materials and lower overall costs in alkyd paints by using the multifunctional additive AMP™ co-dispersant and neutralizing amine (2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol).

"Our customers are continually being asked to improve performance while reducing costs," said Liam Doherty, global marketing manager for ANGUS. "AMP co-dispersant and neutralizing amine can add many benefits to formulations while maintaining efficiency, including up to 10 percent cost reduction as less product is needed to achieve the same results as other products available in the market."

The structure and property profile of AMP helps customers to save money because they can emulsify up to 15 percent water into solvent-based alkyd paints with no process or equipment changes, and no additional raw materials. In addition, AMP is compatible with most conventional long and medium alkyd resins as well as other ingredients in the paint and serves as a highly efficient, multifunctional co-dispersant and neutralizer that offers low volatility, low odor, low color, a good toxicity profile and primary amine functionality. AMP can offer many benefits at various stages of paint manufacture, including:

  • Paint Stability: Viscosity stability can improve when using AMP co-dispersant and neutralizing amine in the grind. Paints are more freeze/thaw stable, and paints with zinc oxide are more resistant to gelling.
  • Dry Film Properties: AMP co-dispersant and neutralizing amine is a slow evaporating material, making it effective in the grind as a co-dispersant. It does this by placing a negative charge on each of the pigment particles, which repel each other and keep the pigment well dispersed, while also preventing agglomeration. This contributes to excellent dry film properties, including:
    • Opacity: AMP provides very high dispersion of all pigments, creating excellent hiding power.
    • Color acceptance: AMP provides excellent color development of pigments, for both dry and pre-dispersed colorants. This helps to provide additional savings by lowering tint levels.
    • Gloss: Specular reflectance is enhanced in semi-gloss and gloss paints when AMP is used.
    • Wood adhesion: The unique structure of AMP offers improved adhesion to wooden surfaces.

"Many of our customers have relied on AMP co-dispersant and neutralizing amine to enhance rheology modifer performance in their formulations, as a co-dispersant to add gloss or opacity, or to improve color stability, but many customers are unaware of the full range of benefits that AMP can offer," said Doherty. "I am not aware of any other supplier or alternative product that can deliver comparable results."
