Albemarle to Increase Prices of Phosphorus Containing Flame Retardants

Published on 2008-05-16. Author : SpecialChem

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Specialty chemicals maker Albemarle Corporation will increase the prices of its ANTIBLAZE® and certain phosphorus-containing SAYTEX® flame retardant products used in construction and furnishing applications effective immediately, or as contracts allow. Price increases will vary for specific products within each of the following product families:

  • ANTIBLAZE TMCP flame retardants & TMCP blends: up to 20 percent
  • SAYTEX RB-79 flame retardant blends containing phosphorous components: up to 15 percent
  • ANTIBLAZE TDCP flame retardant & TDCP blends: up to 15 percent
  • ANTIBLAZE V6 flame retardant & V6 blends: up to 15 percent
  • ANTIBLAZE V490 (DEEP) flame retardant: up to 15 percent
  • Other ANTIBLAZE products not listed here: up to 15 percent.

"These increases are in response to unprecedented high demand for elemental phosphorus, a key raw material for these products, and to a shortage of energy in key producing regions of China," said Jan Vijverman, Albemarle business manager for polyurethane flame retardants. "Significant price action is required to ensure a continuing supply of our products.

"Furthermore, during this period of instability in price and availability of phosphorus, Albemarle may only be able to guarantee short-term pricing validity dates under new or renewed contracts for phosphorus-containing products, and may be required to enact further price increases with little notice, as contracts allow, in order to assure reliable supply," Vijverman said.

ANTIBLAZE and SAYTEX flame retardants, part of Albemarle's Polymer Additives segment, add life-saving properties to materials used in rigid foam insulation and roofing materials; flexible foam for furniture and furnishings; and coatings, adhesives, sealants and other building materials.
