The 12-day sporting spectacular is being held in Melbourne, where the main stadium - Melbourne Cricket Ground - was recently redeveloped using the company's International® protective coatings products.

Around 55 percent of the venue was rebuilt over a three-year period at a cost of AUS$ 425 million. Most of the work was concentrated on the north side of the stadium, where more than 5,000 tons of steel form the core of the new main grandstand.

This steel is protected by the company's coatings products, including Interzinc® 315, Intercure® 420 and Interfine® 629.

The MCG - known as The People's Ground - is one of Australia's premier sports facilities, regularly hosting major events such as cricket, rugby and Aussie rules football.

Originally built in the 1850s, it was the main stadium used for the first ever Olympic Games held in Australia - in 1956 - and now has an increased capacity of more than 100,000.

The 2006 Commonwealth Games, which were officially opened on March 15, are the 18th in the competition's history, with 71 nations competing.
