Aerospace Coatings

MT-Propeller is well known throughout the world of general aviation as one of the leading manufacturers of natural composite propellers for single- and twin-engine aircraft, airships, wind tunnels and other special applications. Not only can the products be used on original propellers made at MT Propellers manufacturing locations, but also at their more than 60 service centers throughout the world.

We are proud to be chosen to work with such a fine company, as our latest painting system complements the continuous development of MT-Propeller’s exceptional composite blades,” says Richard Giles, Global Technical Service & Training Manager for Sherwin-Williams Aerospace Coatings. “We understand the coatings quality and durability their upscale aviation products demand, and look forward to providing and servicing them with the best aircraft finishes available.

Sherwin-Williams worked closely with its European distributor, Paint Services Group, on this global approval.

MT-Propeller is Using a Focused 3-Step Process:

  • After surface pre-treatment – all composite surfaces are treated with Sherwin-Williams’ CM0480922 Spread ‘n Spray primer
  • Next they are coated with Chrome Hazard Free Flexible Epoxy Primer (CM0483790)
  • Next the topcoat is applied to meet MT-Propeller’s customer needs: depending on whether they want a matte or gloss finish as the final touch on their plane’s blade

Polane T - Two-component Low Gloss Polyurethane Enamel Coating

So the composite propellers are created with two different topcoat options; a matte or gloss finish. For matte finish, Sherwin-Williams provides Polane T, a two-component low gloss polyurethane enamel coating with superior appearance. It provides excellent adhesion and features excellent chemical, impact, abrasion and water resistance.

Acry-Glo Acrylic Urethane - Two-component Topcoat

For an MT-Propeller customer that specifies a gloss finish, Sherwin-Williams’ Acry-Glo acrylic urethane is a two-component topcoat designed for quick drying stripes or for small aircraft products overall finishing. A proven performance coating in the aviation industry for more than 30 years, Acry-Glo acrylic urethane is quick drying, exhibits outstanding gloss and delivers gloss retention upon weathering. It’s coating is highly resistant to chipping, and is available in solid and metallic finishes.

Prior to the topcoat, each propeller’s surface is treated with Sherwin-Williams’ Chrome Hazard Free Flexible Epoxy Primer (CM0483790). Featuring superior fluid and corrosion resistance, this Chrome Hazard Free primer offers excellent flexibility and hydraulic fluid resistance. It is qualified as part of a complete chrome hazard free certification to SAE’s Aerospace Material Specification (AMS 3095).

Meeting aerospace industry OEM standards and qualifications, Sherwin-Williams provides innovative aerospace coatings designed to give all types of commercial, military and general aviation aircraft longer-lasting coverage with increased durability. This gives aircraft more ‘inservice’ time, allowing for longer periods between paint jobs.
