A New Study from Jotun Strengthens the Position of Copper as Antifouling Agent

Published on 2011-01-12. Author : SpecialChem

The EU has extensive requirements for the documentation of health, safety and environmental properties of active ingredients in antifouling. In order to further strengthen the environmental risk assessment of copper, the major suppliers have co-sponsored a large eco-toxicity study. The outcome is the following: Marine organisms remain unaffected by far higher concentrations of copper than those expected in harbours, ports and shipping lanes due to the use of copper containing antifouling.

Already we know that only a minor fraction of the copper that leaches out from antifouling will become bio-available for organisms other than those on or within millimetres from the hulls of ships. Generally marine organisms are capable of self-regulating their copper level (homeostasis). Collectively the properties of copper provide very strong arguments for its safe use in antifouling.

Point source emissions should, however, be avoided for any responsible use of antifouling - copper containing or not. Thus, the containment and handling of waste from vessel dry-dockings or pleasure craft maintenance is important.
