A Breakthrough in the Fouling Release Coatings Technology

Published on 2010-03-17. Author : SpecialChem

Jotun is strengthening its position in the market, especially within the cruise industry, by introducing its latest in-house Nanorepellent Technology.

Jotun takes a major step within the fouling release coatings (FRC) technology by launching SeaLion Repulse, a product with both release- and repellent properties.

Through nanoscale engineering a repellent silicone layer is created on the surface. The nano structures extend into the water and create a layer that acts as nano scaled springs. When the spring-like structures are compressed, a counter force is developed. The nanoscale springs thereby provide release- and repellent properties. This gives a smoother surface than conventional fouling release coatings and provides up to 10 years lifetime of the coating system under normal conditions.

In addition to this breakthrough in the fouling release coatings technology, Jotun is a clear market leader with respect to the state-of-the-art silyl acrylate technology. SeaQuantum is known as the world's most advanced antifouling and has been applied to more than 5,000 vessels since it was launched in year 2000. Today SeaQuantum is established as the ultimate fuel saving antifouling.

Cruise owners have chosen high quality products from Jotun for years, including major brands within primers, topcoats, antifouling and fouling release coatings - both at drydocking and newbuilding. The world's biggest cruise ship 'Oasis of the Seas' - Royal Caribbean International's latest ship - is sailing with Jotun's products. The amount of 630,000 litres of paint from Jotun was applied.

With the latest breakthrough technology, Jotun claims to be the world's leading coating supplier to the cruise industry.
