A Better Alternative: Bayer MaterialScience Offers Innovative Materials, Application Technologies For Eco-Friendly Alternate Energy Vehicles

Detroit -- Development of eco-friendly alternate energy vehicles (AEVs) is revving up. From consumer pain at the pump caused by steadily rising gas prices to concerns about global warming and tougher fuel economy legislation, there are a variety of economic and environmental forces in play that are transforming AEVs from the periphery to the mainstream. Bayer MaterialScience LLC (BMS), with its global resources and broad product portfolio, is at the forefront of this exciting, fast-paced market.

By definition, AEVs comprise all non-traditional combustion engine passenger vehicles, including gas/electric hybrids, plug-in hybrids, electric vehicles and fuel cell vehicles. An off-shoot of AEVs that can also benefit from Bayer technologies and offer eco-friendly alternatives are neighborhood electric vehicles (NEVs) designed for shorter trips.

The market potential is significant. In fact, a recent UBS/Ricardo study projects that U.S. sales of 1.2 million hybrid vehicles in 2012 is realistic; other sources project even stronger sales. This competitive market features a mix of traditional OEMs as well as emerging OEMs that are striving toward taking these vehicles from the drawing table to the driveway.

BMS' engagement in this emerging market is logical on two fronts. First, the company is dedicated to sustainable development. This commitment has a constant impact not only on BMS' day-to-day business operations, but also the products it produces and the markets it serves.

BMS has an extensive portfolio of materials well-suited for AEV vehicles. Select interior materials/applications include:

  • Baydur® STR reaction injection molding (RIM) system for instrument panel (IP) substrates and Baytec® chemicals for producing IP skins, resulting in an IP that is 100 percent recyclable.
  • Baydur RIM and Baypreg® F systems for composites for underbodies/load floors that are modular and lighter weight.
  • Bio-based Bayfit® systems for foam for seating/headrests that are more environmentally friendly.

Select exterior materials/applications include:

  • Makrolon® polycarbonate (PC) for glazing applications such as panoramic roof panels, backlites and side windows that decrease vehicle weight and enhance occupant safety.
  • Makrolon PC and Apec® PC for LED lighting that results in less energy drain on the battery.
  • Baydur RIM system composite roofing systems that are modular and lighter weight.
  • Makroblend® PC/polyester blend resin, Bayblend® PC/acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) blend resin or the Bayflex® RIM system for reducing the weight of body panels/fenders.
  • Bayhydrol® polyurethane dispersions and Bayhydur® hardeners for waterborne two-component (2K) polyurethane coatings - a more environmentally friendly alternative to solvent-based coatings.
  • Roskydal® UV-cure 2K polyurethane coatings as well as Makrofol® and Bayfol® PC films, all of which make it possible for OEMs to avoid the expense and environmental impact of a conventional paint line.

Loren also emphasizes that utilizing many BMS materials requires only a low capital investment, which is particularly important for cost-conscious OEMs. "Any way you look at it - from materials performance and environmental impact to technical expertise and economic feasibility - BMS is the smart choice for the AEV market."
