Enhance the film while reducing total cost formulation

> Why it is a breakthrough?

Based on novel fibre technology and derived from root crops, Curran® is a green multi-functional additive for film enhancement and rheology modification. Curran® offers outstanding performance, up to 50% reduction of micro cracking, up to 200% improvement of mud crack resistance, an improved opacity resulting in up to 6% reduction in Titanium Dioxide and up to 90% reduction of coalescing solvents resulting in reduced odour and VOC.

Curran® within a formulation significantly improves the mechanical properties of the dry film. The ability of Curran® to improve the mechanical properties reduces the formation of mud cracking which can be commonly observed especially over uneven surfaces.

Curran® is able to increase the film thickness from 500µm to 1500µm before the dry film begin to show cracks. Curran® is excellent if the surface has texture, which would normally cause cracking. Curran® helps for application errors where thick coats are applied in areas. The increased stress caused by the elevated temperature shows that the increased mechanical strength imparted by Curran®, is suitable for a variety of climates. Similar results are observed at low and ambient temperatures.

> Opacity

Curran® has been proven to provide a significant opacity increase in many formulae. This increase in opacity can allow for up to a 6% reduction in Titanium Dioxide level or removal of some opacifying agents, which can lead to an overall cost saving for the formulation.

This increase in opacity has been observed over a range of different binders. The ability of Curran® to optimise the pigment packing within the final film, provides the improvement in opacity.

Solvent Reduction

The addition of Curran® within a paint formulation may allow for a significant reduction in the solvents required for coalescence without adversely affecting the mechanical properties of the dry film. The following data shows the reduction in the overall volume of solvent required when Curran® is present.

Curran® is able to remove up to 90% of the solvent levels present without affecting the mechanical properties of the dry film. This reduction in solvent also reduces odour and VOC's depending on coalescent solvent used. Curran® helps reduce the amount of binder, TiO2, coalescent agent, solvents and rheology modifier within a formulation.

Curran® can reduce cracking by up to 50%. Reduction of micro cracking will reduce dirt pickup, and prolong integrity of the film.

> Increased Open Time, Shear Thinning Rheology and High Scrub resistance

The addition of Curran® within a formulation offer other advantages. It helps increase open time, it helps impart some rheology, and it improves wet scrub resistance. Curran® provides a significant improvement in the amount of film loss: it gives a 35% reduction in the film loss.

> Applying paint with Curran®

Curran® is easy to apply. The shear thinning of Curran® allows ease of application during roller transfer. Although the viscosity of Curran® does reduce, it does not adversely effect the application or mechanical properties. The roller transfer is supplemented with the viscosity curve of Curran® at higher levels of shear. The values recorded, show that the roller transfer of the sample containing Curran® is slightly increased to that of the control. download application Properties
