Waxes
Waxes are solid to semi solid materials added to a coating to enhance the surface properties like water repulsion, maintain the coating appearance (gloss, matting, texturing), improve the rheology, and prevent pigment settling. Due to all these properties, waxes are also employed as surface conditioners or rheology modifiers. Waxes can be natural (carnauba and montan wax), petroleum based (paraffins, microcrystalline wax) or synthetic, derived from petroleum distillates or residues (polyethylene, polypropylene, Fischer-Tropsch wax).
