Catalysts / Accelerators / Initiators

Catalysts/accelerators/initiators initiate the crosslinking reactions in a coating without getting chemically consumed in the process. The heat that evolves during catalytic reactions, helps in drying the coat. This is why catalysts/accelerators are added during application and not during storage. Using too much of catalyst can prevent levelling of the paint and cause stress cracking. Various amines, organometallics, acids and metallic salts are used as catalysts/accelerators in coatings.

Select Right Catalyst for Your Coatings

Catalysts are an essential component in many paints and coating formulations. But do not get confused with “catalyst accelerates cross-linking” statement. Indeed, some catalysts decelerate it. Keeping in mind that a catalyst modifies the energy required to proceed the cross-linking reaction will give you the basic ground to understand catalysts.
