DSM Desotech Announces New Plant Opening in Stanley, NC

SpecialChem / May 13, 2002

Elgin, Illinois- DSM Desotech Inc., a world leader in the development and supply of UV-curable fiber optic materials, has announced the completion of their newest production facility in Stanley, North Carolina. The plant is the third new facility for DSM Desotech in three years, following the 1999 grand opening of a plant in Hoek van Holland, the Netherlands, and a new facility in Tsukuba, Japan, in 2001 (a 50/50 joint venture between DSM and JSR).

Initiated two years ago in response to Desotech's long-range planning effort to ensure capacity ahead of need through 2007, the $33 million investment marks the company's largest, and most technically sophisticated production facility to date.

"We have merged the best in engineering and design practices from each of our other global operations into this plant-along with new digital technologies that we are among the first within DSM (globally) to implement," says Project Manager Kees de Glopper. "The result is a more 'intelligent', and certainly more process-efficient, operation."

The new Stanley facility, which has absorbed DSM Desotech's previous operation in Charlotte, NC, will produce fiber optic coating materials, as well as other specialty UV-curable materials including hardcoats, CD lacquers, DVD bonding adhesives and rapid prototyping resins.

"Interest in the speed, efficiency and environmental friendliness of UV-curable materials continues to grow, says DSM Desotech President Jan Paul de Vries. "Despite current setbacks for the telecommunications industry, we have continued with the completion of this facility, staying focused on not only the long-term needs of the telecom market, but the growing demand for UV-curable materials in a variety of other industries."

DSM Desotech is headquartered in Elgin, Illinois. In addition to its four production facilities located in the U.S., Europe and Japan, the company also operates a global network of sales offices and agents in more than 20 countries. Desotech is a business unit of DSM-a highly integrated group of companies that is active worldwide in the field of life science products, performance materials and chemicals. DSM has annual sales of more than $8 billion and employs approximately 22,000 people at more than 200 sites worldwide.
