Architectural Coatings

Titanium dioxide for architectural coatings

Architectural coatings demand good aesthetics and durability

Architectural coatings refer to paints designed for interiors and exteriors of homes and buildings. Aesthetics are a key aspect of architectural coatings; for this reason, architectural paints are also referred to as decorative paints. In addition to producing an appealing surface in various colors and textures, architectural paints must also have good bonding strength to cement and wood substrates. Good alkali, UV and water resistance, and easy maintenance are also important characteristics of architectural coatings. Specialized architectural coatings may also be required to be mildew resistant, chemical resistant, or corrosion resistant.

Performance requirements of interior and exterior coatings differ due to varying importance of coating objectives and the different environments they are exposed to. An interior paint is expected to have good hiding power, good stain repellency, vibrant color options, and extended durability. In addition, it must be easy to apply and maintain. Good exterior paints must retain their fresh look in the face of extreme temperatures, frequent precipitation, harsh sunlight and dust from the environment.

The choice of titanium dioxide for architectural coatings depends on the type of coating that needs to be produced. The properties of TiO2 greatly impact the color, sheen, coverage, and durability of architectural coatings.

The Ti-Pure™ titanium dioxide solution

Chemours is a pioneer in TiO2 technology for the coatings industry. It has a continuing legacy of quality and innovation for architectural coating solutions. Chemours’ Ti-Pure™ range of titanium dioxide grades offers manufacturers and paint formulators a diverse set of solutions with best-in-class product quality and reliable customer service. Coatings produced with Ti-Pure™ TiO2 exhibit superior aesthetics, enhanced durability, better protection, and ease of application.

Paint producers, all over the world, depend on Ti-Pure™ TiO2 to produce high-quality, attractive architectural coatings. A brighter white, made possible with high-quality Ti-Pure™ titanium dioxide also facilitates a greater range of more nuanced colors. Ti-Pure™ titanium dioxide is easily dispersed which helps ensure batch-to-batch consistency for the paint maker, and better opacity, brighter color, and ease of use for the end-user. The Ti-Pure™ range includes several grades that are ideally suited to various architectural applications. They have been designed to provide the right balance of gloss, tint retention, self-cleaning ability, and durability for both interior and exterior applications.

In interior coatings, Ti-Pure™ TiO2 imparts brightness to whites and enhances the vibrancy of colors. It allows formulators to achieve the desired level of gloss for any interior space with excellent opacity. Ti-Pure™ produces a smooth finish and increases the coverage of paints due to its exceptional hiding power. Greater coverage reduces the number of coats required to complete the job, lowering costs. The enhanced durability of Ti-Pure™ keeps walls looking freshly painted for longer.

Exterior surfaces exposed to the elements require a more durable coating that can resist ultraviolet rays from the sun. Ti-Pure™ TiO2 enables an exterior paint to better resist color fading chalking, cracking and peeling. The enhanced durability, due to Ti-Pure™, allows the coating to maintain a freshly painted look over time.

Choose your Ti-Pure™ TiO2 solution based on balance of properties

The desired balance between hiding power, gloss, durability and tint retention determines the best grade for an application. In general, higher gloss coatings have a smoother and harder surface which gives them better dirt pickup resistance. For high gloss applications a good balance of properties associated with a narrow particle size distribution is required. Rough and more porous surfaces, of a low-gloss flat coating, allow dirt to get stuck in the valleys between pigment particles. For flat architectural coatings, the selection criteria are durability, tint retention, hiding power, and self-cleaning ability. High hiding power and ease of dispersion are the main properties required for interior architectural satins, silks and semi-gloss paints.

Ti-Pure™ offers solutions for flat, semi-gloss and high gloss architectural coatings. The following table shows the suitability of various Ti-Pure™ grades based on application and the desired finish. Each ingredient in an architectural coating affects the overall coating properties. Titanium dioxide plays a greater role in coating’s performance than just a white pigment. Using an unsuitable grade in a coating formulation can lead to poor coating properties and dissatisfied customers. High-quality Ti-Pure™ TiO2 helps produce brighter, more durable coatings that meet consumer expectations and drives profitability for coating manufacturers. With paints made with Ti-Pure™ TiO2 formulators can achieve the following objectives:
  • Ease of application
  • Require fewer coats to complete the job
  • Produce a smooth and even finish hiding substrate imperfections
  • Resistance to chalking, fading, peeling and flaking
  • Easy cleaning surface
  • Greater flexibility in color matching
  • Reduce the need for frequent re-coats and touch ups
  • Produce vibrant colors
  • Longer lasting ‘fresh’ look
